rfp-robotRFP ROBOT: Website Request for Proposal Generator

The time has come for a new website (or website redesign), which means you need to write a website request for proposal or web RFP. A Google search produces a few examples, but they vary wildly and don’t seem to speak really to your goals for developing or redesigning a new website. You need to write a website RFP that will clearly articulate your needs and generate responses from the best website designers and developers out there. But how?

Have no fear, RFP Robot is here. He will walk you through a step-by-step process to help you work through the details of your project and create a PDF formatted website design RFP that will provide the information vendors need to write an accurate bid. RFP Robot will tell you what info you should include, point out pitfalls, and give examples.

Solved with CSS! Logical Styling Based on the Number of Given Elements

This post is the third in a series about the power of CSS. Article Series: Colorizing SVG Backgrounds Dropdown Menus Logical Styling Based On the Number of Given Elements (this post) Did you know that CSS is Turing complete? Did you know that you can use it to do some pretty serious logical styling? Well you can! You don’t have to set all of your logic-based styling rules in JavaScript, or even have to use JavaScript to set classes you are styling against. In many cases, CSS can handle that itself. I’m still discovering new CSS tricks everyday, and it just makes me love it even more. This year, I started working at Bustle Digital Group. In media, as with a lot of products, the engineering team builds a platform that should support all use cases. Our CMS provides capabilities for authors and editors to create articles as well as…

Of Note: Better Text Annotations for the Web

The Current Standard People have annotated texts since they had texts to annotate. Annotations clarify, contextualize, and complement a subject. An Xiao Mina points out that “Annotation is motivated by the human need to talk and explain; in this way, annotation provides a structure for extending or depicting the meaning of things in the world.” At their best, they illuminate subtle meanings; at their worst, they distract from the drift of their referent. Putting aside the question of when and how to use them, the way annotations are designed influences the experience of reading — for better or worse. This is as true for the Web as it is for print. Yet online annotations nearly always mimic patterns from print that are shaped more by the constraints of production than by the content and the experience of reading. On the Web, annotation patterns solve a content problem (showing secondary text) yet create reading…

A Look Back at Viget’s First Apprenticeship Cohort

This week, our first cohort of apprentices wrap up their 10 week-long Viget experience.  The apprentices are filling out feedback surveys, their advisors are preparing their final review lunches, and Erica is starting to connect with applicants for our next cohort.  Before we all move on to our next challenge, I want to take a step back and reflect on our program design and the exceptional folks who joined in our first official cross-disciplinary apprenticeship class. Our Program We designed the Viget apprenticeship program with three main areas for learning, each one reinforcing the other: Discipline-specific learning & trainingGlobal curriculumClient work Discipline-specific learning & training Each apprentice had a dedicated mentor with whom they met each week. Mentors were responsible for helping apprentices ramp up on specific skills with increasing levels of autonomy. Make Way for Google Wave

If you’ve been out of the loop lately, then you may have missed Google’s big announcement about their newest communication platform called Google Wave. Google Wave allows users to communicate and collaborate in real time by combining email, instant messaging, social networking, wikis, project management and web chat all in one place.
