rfp-robotRFP ROBOT: Website Request for Proposal Generator

The time has come for a new website (or website redesign), which means you need to write a website request for proposal or web RFP. A Google search produces a few examples, but they vary wildly and don’t seem to speak really to your goals for developing or redesigning a new website. You need to write a website RFP that will clearly articulate your needs and generate responses from the best website designers and developers out there. But how?

Have no fear, RFP Robot is here. He will walk you through a step-by-step process to help you work through the details of your project and create a PDF formatted website design RFP that will provide the information vendors need to write an accurate bid. RFP Robot will tell you what info you should include, point out pitfalls, and give examples.

Mattress Pro

Pixeldust’s challenge was to build an elegant and scalable site giving Mattress Pro an equal presence to Sealy and other large mattress manufacturers. Pixeldust designed a brand-new identity and sleek interface that incorporated Flash and a content management system. The overall result proved to be a huge success: the website played a big role in Mattress Pro’s successful merger negotiations with Mattress Firm.

Artifacts of Existence

Artifacts of Existence is a collection of work by David Brown featuring a non-fiction novel, screenplay and ‘inside Hollywood’ documentary. Pixeldust designed and developed an earthy site that would help him release his work on the web. The site also features free downloads of work from local artists.

Talha Paracha: GSoC'16 – Pubkey Encrypt – Week 12 Report

This week marks the completion of my Google Summer of Code 2016 project Pubkey Encrypt. So I’ve spent the past 3 months building this module for Drupal 8 in the supervision of mentors Adam Bergstein (@nerdstein) and Colan Schwartz (@colan). You can download Pubkey Encrypt from its official project page. Accordingly, the module provides a way of encrypting data with users’ login-credentials. It is based on ownCloud’s Data Encryption Model and is an attempt of providing an easy-to-use security module for website maintainers. Drupal Developer Creating a static copy of a Drupal 6 site

As you probably already know, Drupal 6 is end-of-lifed. This creates many risks for Drupal 6 site owners to keep their site up! First and foremost: security updates are difficult to find and get. Because the energy of the Drupal community as a whole is focused on Drupal 8, the resources dedicated to keeping Drupal 6 secure are very limited. So, your site is more vulnerable to be hacked. Many low-end website owners shrug off the risk of being hacked. Don’t dismiss this risk! Your website could be defaced, have private data become public, and jeopardize your business and reputation. Those may be obvious risks. What may be less obvious is that a hacked Drupal 6 website can be used to infiltrate and deface other websites hosted from the same server. These can be websites operated by your organization – or in a shared hosting environment – even other businesses and…

Virtuoso Performance: Translation migration and more

Translation migration and more I’m running a bit behind, but I want to make it a practice to blog about each migration project I’m involved with (with each client’s permission, of course). Constructed examples are all well and good, but there’s nothing like real-world scenarios to give the flavor of using the migration framework in practice. Where possible (again with the client’s permission), I will share the full migration implementation on GitHub, so people can see not only code snippets illustrating particular points, but their full context. This spring I contracted with North Studio, a web and mobile development shop based in British Columbia, to assist with the migration of their customer The Carlyle Group’s multilingual site from Drupal 6 to Drupal 8. As happens more often than not when moving from one major version to another of Drupal, the opportunity was taken to refactor the site, rethinking some of…

Appnovation Technologies: Drupal 8: Where Features meet Functionality

Drupal 8 is here. We know that developers and users alike are full of praise for Drupal 8, but what, if anything, is so desirable about it, so ‘must-have’? Drupal Developer

Dark Patterns

Dark patterns are not a mistake as they are strategies and tactics used to trick users into doing things, even and especially when they are not in the best interest of the user: You can review a number of sites that are being publicly “shamed” for using such things here. A great example is ecommerce stores adding things to your basket, like this: Unreal and unethical, IMO. The post Dark Patterns appeared first on John Saddington. Drupal Developer

Project Inquiry

In the project inquiry form, we will walk you through five short steps, ask the right questions, and even give some pointers on how to receive the most accurate proposal. We will use this information to create a proposal for your project, and we generate a formatted Request For Proposal PDF that you can use. You will be redirected to a download link as soon as you submit the form. YouTube videos stop working with Lightbox2? Here's the fix!

This is similar to our last article about how YouTube videos stopped working with Embedded Video Field on Drupal 6 – except this is for Lightbox2 and affects Drupal 6, 7 and 8.While we still can’t seem to find any announcement from Google, it appears that the old YouTube embed code (which is used by the Lightbox2 module) has stopped working.Using Lightbox2 to play videos is sort of an edge case, and there wasn’t an existing fix for it, so we created a patch on this issue. We encountered this issue with one of our Drupal 6 Long-Term Support customers, so we created a Drupal 6 patch too!(We created a Drupal 7 patch, and looking at the code the Drupal 8 version appears to be affected also, but since there is no stable release for it, we didn’t test it or create a D8 patch.)To fix: just apply the 6.x-1.x or 7.x-2.x…

Jim Birch: Making a multi-column content section with Drupal Paragraphs and Bootstrap

The Drupal Paragraphs module allows developers to created chunks of content, allowing admins to have more defined control than they would have in a normal WYSIWYG.  In this post, I will explain how to create a single paragraph bundle that can be used to display a 2, 3, 4, or 6 column layout.  In each of these columns, we will be able to use any Paragraph bundles that we define.  This post covers how to do it in Drupal 8, but the process for Drupal 7 is very similar, just the markup in the template would be different. Once you have the Paragraphs module installed, go to Structure > Paragraph types to click the Add paragraphs type button.  Paragraph types are entities, just like Nodes (Content Types).  They don’t have Titles or URLs like nodes do, but they are revision-able, and take fields.  If you are new Paragraphs, take some…

Wix ADI Aims To Revolutionize The Website Creation Process

Website builder Wix has recently unveiled its new system called Artificial Design Intelligence (ADI), which the company is promoting as “the future of website building.” Wix ADI is an AI-driven service that not only designs your website but also gathers content. Wix considers their new service as the first AI website builder to reach the market since The Grid. Most of the adopters of The Grid – especially those who paid upfront – may have been over-promised a tad.  Even with substantial funding, The Grid’s extended beta period has been continuing due to mixed reviews and with no clear and revolutionary product in sight. With the inevitable release of Wix ADI, the blog hysteria that AI has made designers obsolete may be revived. However, Wix wants to make it clear that it has not created an AI-based design system. They are only adopting the term artificial intelligence for marketing purposes.…

Entertainment Value

How often do we tell others (and ourselves) that we’re doing something because of the “entertainment value?” If I’m honest, I probably do this more than I’d like to admit. via Dilbert We have optimized our lives around comfort and have gone to incredible lengths to minimize pain (and anything even in the vicinity of discomfort). Entertainment is a bit of combination of both: It’s comfortable and fun and ends up eating a lot of time, time that could be used to focus on fixing the things that need to be fixed. And generally-speaking, the things that need to be fixed will require pain, sacrifice, and may ironically require us to break things so that we might fix them. But we need to. Jane Elliott

These two videos of Jane Elliott were powerful. The first one is short while the second one is a bit longer. Totally worth the view and tough at times, to be honest. And this is her famous experiment “Blue Eyes / Brown Eyes”: You can see the original experiment here. Oh, another one: I think we all have a lot to learn about how deep our biases really are. Scary to think and I believe that’s why we avoid discussing them so often. It’s a bigger problem then we could possibly imagine.   The post Jane Elliott appeared first on John Saddington. Drupal Development – Creating a Multilingual Site in Drupal

If you’ve never created a multilingual site for a client before, it can seem like a daunting task. Even if you speak geek it’s still easy to get lost in a sea of code, strings, files and acronyms. Thankfully, Drupal 7 makes this task a little easier. In this article we decode the secrets to Developing a multilingual site in Drupal. The first two items you need to become best friends with are internationalization (i18n) and localization (l10n). Internationalization and localization are means of adapting computer software to different languages and regional differences. Here’s how they’re broken down: Internationalization is the process of designing a software application so that it can be adapted to various languages and regions without engineering changes. The application will give you the ability to replace your English content with German (or whatever language you want). In other words, internationalization gives you the framework to create…
