rfp-robotRFP ROBOT: Website Request for Proposal Generator

The time has come for a new website (or website redesign), which means you need to write a website request for proposal or web RFP. A Google search produces a few examples, but they vary wildly and don’t seem to speak really to your goals for developing or redesigning a new website. You need to write a website RFP that will clearly articulate your needs and generate responses from the best website designers and developers out there. But how?

Have no fear, RFP Robot is here. He will walk you through a step-by-step process to help you work through the details of your project and create a PDF formatted website design RFP that will provide the information vendors need to write an accurate bid. RFP Robot will tell you what info you should include, point out pitfalls, and give examples.

Helping a Beginner Understand Getting a Website Live

I got a great email from a fellow named Josh Long the other day. He is, in his words, “relatively new to web design” and was a bit stuck on the concept of getting a site live. I should say that I’m happy to get emails like this an I always read them, but I typically can’t offer tech support over email. If I can respond at all, I normally point people to other community resources. In this case, it struck me what a perfect moment this is for Josh. He’s a little confused, but he knows enough to be asking a lot of questions and sorting through all this stuff. I figured this was a wonderful opportunity to dig into his questions, hopefully helping him and just maybe helping others in a similar situation. Here’s one of the original paragraphs Daniel sent me, completely unedited: I’m relatively new to…

Experience Express in Nashville: Decoupled in the Spotlight at DrupalCon

As the weather heated up last week in Nashville and the city’s eponymous hot chicken incinerated tongues left and right, something else was burning in the spotlight at DrupalCon Nashville: decoupled Drupal. The Music City Center played host to the Drupal community and a coterie of developers, technologists, businesspeople, and community builders passionate about our flinty open-source content management system. For me, the most significant outcome of the conference, which I’ve attended for almost a decade now, was the excitement — and lingering bewilderment — surrounding decoupled Drupal. Every session room concerning decoupled Drupal was standing room only, and the interest was palpable. That meant it was a great time to announce the second edition of Decoupled Drupal Days, the premier conference on decoupled Drupal, to be held again in New York City between August 17–19, 2018. This year, DrupalCon Nashville was also the venue for the inaugural Decoupled Summit,…

Building a Serverless CMS Powered by Vue.js

Vue.js, a progressive framework for building user interfaces, is gaining in popularity among developers. But why yet another JavaScript framework? Vue has learned from the experiences of Angular and React and many see it as simpler to implement and understand. Vue.js is lightweight and easily adoptable. It’s reactive and component-based, allowing you to create pluggable components you can add to any project. Most importantly for this tutorial, Vue and its hallmark incremental adoptability allows you to try Vue without putting your existing code base at risk. Vue works well with serverless application architectures. Serverless architectures are becoming the preferred architecture for many developers because it allows them to create and fine-tune products efficiently without having to bear the burdens (server maintenance, outages, and scaling bottlenecks) of traditional server-based architecture. Sarah Drasner recently wrote an entire series on how to create a serverless checkout flow powered by Vue and is a…

The Web Is Changing: Introducing Experience Express

At no point in the history of digital content has there ever been such a dizzying proliferation of devices in our lives, and experiences we encounter and consume. Long the most critical element of an organization’s digital presence, the website is increasingly treated as just a single facet in a kaleidoscope of content channels and form factors. Many of today’s users, in the course of acquiring content or data, never touch a desktop web browser at all. How do we address this channel explosion and the issues that ensue as it continues? If the architectural shift we are witnessing — from monoliths to microservices — is truly as monumental as it sounds, is Drupal ready? More importantly, how can you use Drupal to ensure that your digital experiences are prepared for the omnichannel future? And what’s happening on the ground and in the minds of developers, marketers, and business decision-makers?…

Design Systems: Building a Parts Kit

In our series on design systems, we’ve discussed the advantages and approaches to creating a system from a design perspective. In this post, I’d like to cover some of the technical benefits of a well-organized built design system, or “parts kit”. By now, you’re hopefully convinced of the benefits of a design system and are ready to invest the time and money to partner with an agency, like Viget, to create something that achieves your vision. The next step will be to apply it to your digital platforms by building it. But wait! If the design system represents your vision and investment, a good parts kit is like insurance that protects that vision when it goes out into the world. The Importance of Building it Right A well-constructed parts kit has many benefits that can ensure the consistency and longevity of a design system. The investment in development quality is…
